Dasun Shanaka, the former Sri Lankan captain, has been omitted from the 16-member squad announced for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. This selection shake-up sees three changes compared to the team that faced Zimbabwe last month, with aggressive middle-order batsman Nuwanidu Fernando and leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay also missing out. The squad bolsters the batting and bowling options with the inclusion of all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne and young opener Shevon Daniel.

Dasun Shanaka‘s recent ODI form has been a cause for concern. In his last 21 innings, dating back to January 2023, he has managed just one half-century and a meagre average of 12.25. This significant drop in performance has undoubtedly played a role in his exclusion from the Sri Lankan squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. Karunaratne’s return, on the other hand, is a welcome boost. The talented all-rounder missed the Zimbabwe series due to injury but brings valuable experience to the side. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a key asset in the ODI lineup.

Daniel, an uncapped 22-year-old opener, gets his chance to impress on the international stage. He has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, scoring a truckload of runs and catching the selectors’ eye. His inclusion adds youth and explosiveness to the top order, and his performance will be closely watched.

Fernando, Vandersay hard done by!

Fernando and Vandersay’s omissions though, are extremely surprising given the fact that the former didn’t get a single game in the previous series against Zimbabwe while the latter did fairly well in the one opportunity that he received. The overall squad presents an intriguing mix of experience and youth. The return of Karunaratne and the inclusion of exciting young talents like Daniel offer fresh hope for a change in fortunes after a horrendous time in the format in recent times.

Sri Lanka ODI squad: Kusal Mendis (c), Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sahan Arachchige, Shevon Daniel, Janith Liyanage, Chamika Karunaratne, Mahesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Akila Dananjaya, Wanindu Hasaranga
