Shubman Gill showed everyone what he was made up of after the right-handed batter slammed 208 off 149 balls with 19 fours and nine sixes. India won by 12 runs and this gave the Men in Blue a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The Punjab batter received high praise from former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, who gave special mention to Gill and recalled Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s six-hitting abilities in his series of latest tweets.

He took to Twitter and opened up on MS Dhoni’s craft and the way he used to hit lusty blows with a lot of power. “When I saw Dhoni the first time that he mostly hit straight sixes told me that he will be consistent when it comes to big hitting. Gill has the same gift. Fingers crossed for him,” Manjrekar said in a tweet.

Here is the Tweet:

Gill became the youngest player in the world to score a double ton

Gill has been in roaring form in ODIs in his last ten innings. He recently hit his second ODI hundred against Sri Lanka at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Before he made his double hundred against the Kiwis, Gill had slammed his third ODI hundred against the black caps. He had scored his maiden ODI century at Harare against Zimbabwe.

His innings took India to 340-8 in their 50 overs. He played beautifully and used the straight boundaries to good effect. Once he crossed his hundred, he switched gears and hit some monstrous sixes against the New Zealand bowlers. He, single-handedly, steered India to a big total after Rohit Sharma, who scored 34 off 38 balls, and Virat Kohli, who fell to Mitchell Santner for just eight runs.

He hit three consecutive sixes in the 49th over to bring up his double century. He became the youngest player to score a double ton and also the fifth Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. He was named player of the Match for his sensational innings against the Kiwis.
