After the iconic Test series between Australia and West Indies where we saw one of the best matches in cricket history as well, came the ODI series as well. Over here the Aussies had completely dominated the West Indies at home and gave them a 3-0 battering. There were a lot of great performances by the young Australian youngsters as well. The likes of Xavier Bartlett and Josh Inglis had shown some great performances in this series especially Bartlett who was playing his debut series and continued his great form from the Big Bash League(BBL). The Aussies will be happy after this series even after the Gabba Test upset they faced in the Test series.

The one young talent that the Australian experts were looking forward to was Jake Fraser McGurk, who also had a decent season in the BBL for the Melbourne Renegades. McGurk came into the limelight after a great List A career as well where he was averaging over 30 and striking over 140. His performance in the BBL was enough to get him his first ODI call-up in the side as well. In the two games he featured in McGurk was dismissed in his first ODI for a score of 10. In the next game, he showcased some ability with an aggressive innings of 41 from just 18 balls.

Ponting makes a big comparison

Australia legend Ricky Ponting also gave his opinions on the young batter and his performances and has compared him to the likes of David Warner. McGurk is still early in his career and to see that he has already attained praise from Ponting is something to cherish. The Former Aussie skipper said that he could be fast-tracked in the Aussie system and ended his statement by saying “ Jake has got as much talent as David had come coming through … the earlier they can get him into the system the better. “ This will feel like a dream statement from Ponting to McGurk who has just started to hit the straps in the national side.

The amount of praise McGurk has been getting is unreal and seeing his recent performances we are not surprised that he can live up to this comparison. However, it is still really early to put him on the pedestal and it will be better if we see him play more in the national side before, we make these big comparisons. McGurk has shown promise in his career in white ball cricket and to get some praises from someone like Ponting is still a huge thing since the former legend is known to be really critical by nature.
