Ravichandran Ashwin was making big statements with his performances in the Indian T20 league under the leadership of Dhoni. On the back of those numerous match-winning performances, he made his debut in June 2010. The off-spinner was selected in India’s squad for the 2011 World Cup and was considered India’s trump card. He picked up the big wickets of Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting in the quarter-final of the tournament that set up the big five-wicket win for India.

Ashwin was Dhoni’s most treasured weapon in his armoury which he would unleash every time he wanted a wicket and the spinner would never disappoint. The duo had a good understanding between each other as they planned the dismissals of numerous batters together. Ashwin picked up 105 wickets in 78 games at an average of 32 and an economy rate of 4.83.
