England needed a win today against New Zealand to stay in contention for reaching the semi-finals and they registered one as well. Jos Buttler and Co. beat New Zealand by 20 runs on Tuesday to earn crucial 2 points. The win also means that all three teams such as England, New Zealand and Australia have now 5 points each to their name.

Earlier, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. Alex Hales and Jos Buttler struggled to score boundaries in the initial few overs but Hales changed the momentum by scoring three boundaries to Southee in the 5th over. As a result of that, England managed to score 40 runs in the first five overs without losing any wickets.

Hales went on to produce a fine half-century to help England get a good start. He perished right after that off Santner in the 11th over. But Buttler found his feet by then and launched an attack on the New Zealand bowlers. The likes of Moeen Ali (5), Livingstone (20), and Harry Brook (7) got out after short cameos but Buttler kept scoring boundaries at the other end.

He struck 7 fours and 2 sixes en-route to a blistering knock of 73 runs in 47 balls, helping England reach a formidable score of 179 runs at the end of the first innings. Chasing a steep target, New Zealand didn’t make a great start with the bat. Both Conway (3) and Finn Allen (16) departed inside the powerplay and by the end of first five overs, the Blackcaps had only managed 28 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.

Williamson then joined hands with Glenn Phillips and the duo steadied New Zealand’s ship. Williamson (40 off 40), once again, was guilty of not scoring at a great scoring rate. He scored run-a-ball and it piled pressure on the batters to follow. Phillips, however, continued his fine form as he kept the team in the hunt with a solid knock of 62 runs in just 36 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes.

But, he didn’t get a lot of support at the other end and his wicket in the 18th over meant it was all but over for New Zealand. In the end, they fell 20 runs short of the target. Twitter was abuzz following England’s win over New Zealand. Here’s a look at some of the notable reactions:
