During the ongoing Test match between India and England in Ranchi, former India head coach Ravi Shastri humorously teased a ball boy who appeared sleepy and yawning on Day 1. The fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium began on Friday, with England opting to bat first after winning the toss. The skipper Ben Stokes described the pitch as “interesting” due to its unusual appearance, with dark colour and pronounced cracks.

The initial session proved lively for India, claiming 5 wickets. However, the subsequent two sessions lacked excitement, with the pitch displaying sluggishness and minimal turn. This provided Joe Root an opportunity to showcase his top form in the series, aided by Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson. Previously under scrutiny for his unorthodox dismissal, Root redeemed himself with a splendid century, opting for conventional cricket strokes.

During the uneventful second and third sessions, with sparse attendance in the stadium, even the spectators seemed disengaged. A young ball boy, stationed near the boundary line, appeared drowsy and yawned. The guy was not aware that the camera captured the moment, prompting commentator Ravi Shastri to deliver a humorous remark.

“Wake up, old boy… Have a glass of water, the cricket is getting interesting,” Shastri was heard saying on air which left his co-commentators in splits.

Joe Root’s ton takes England to 302/7 on Day 1

On a day when England lost five wickets in the morning session, they showed resilience to reach 302/7 by stumps. Joe Root’s century, his first of the series and 10th against India, was instrumental in their recovery. Root remained unbeaten on 106 off 226 balls, supported by a crucial partnership with Ben Foakes, worth 113 runs off 261 deliveries.

In the final session, Mohammed Siraj dismissed Foakes and Tom Hartley quickly, but Ollie Robinson and Root steadied England with a 50-plus partnership. Debutant Akash Deep impressed with three wickets, while Siraj contributed with two. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took a wicket each. Kuldeep Yadav bowled 10 wicketless overs, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, given a brief spell, couldn’t add to his Test wickets tally, despite his promising start in the format.
