David Warner to miss 3rd T20I vs NZ due to injury, IPL participation to remain unaffected

David Warner will not be a part of New Zealand tour due to an injury.

Australian opener David Warner’s T20I series against New Zealand has been cut short due to adductor soreness. The injury’s severity and timeline are yet to be officially disclosed, but reports suggest it’s minor and shouldn’t affect his participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League in which he will represent the Delhi Capitals.

“Warner will require a brief recovery period which is not expected to affect his availability for the upcoming Indian Premier League leading into to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

While Warner‘s absence is undoubtedly a setback, it also presents a chance for other players to step up and showcase their abilities with the T20 World Cup not too far away now. As far as the 3rd game is concerned, Steve Smith is likely to get another chance at the top of the order in the absence of Warner.

Conway doubtful for 1st Test

Meanwhile, New Zealand batter Devon Conway‘s participation in the upcoming first Test against Australia hangs in the balance after suffering a thumb injury during the T20 series. The 32-year-old sustained the blow while keeping wickets in the second T20I, raising concerns about his fitness for the red-ball battle.

Conway, a key figure in New Zealand’s batting lineup, received medical attention on the field and did not take further part in the match. Fortunately for him, scans have confirmed that there is no fracture. New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead confirmed that Conway will be consulting a specialist before a decision on his participation is made. “It’s still a little bit unknown. Last night he had some strange things going on with his thumb, it was clicking a little bit but at this stage, he has been cleared of a break which is great. He’ll see a hand specialist tomorrow in Wellington and we’ll find out more then,” he said.

His absence would leave a gaping hole at the top of the order, forcing the Kiwis to reshuffle their batting line-up. In case he is ruled out, Will Young is likely to take his place at the top of the order.
