Former South African Pacer Dale Steyn has come up with a critical analysis on Indian batter Shreyas Iyer. The Indian batter was struggling against the seamers in the Indian T20 League 2022. He was finding it hard to get over the short-pitched deliveries. Although, he played spinners without any hurdle.

His struggle against the seamers could be seen in the first T20I between India and South Africa as well. He went to hit three sixes off the Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi followed by his problems against the seamers when he could score only 13 off 17 deliveries.

Hyderabad’s bowling coach Dale Steyn reflected on the issues Iyer is going through. Former bowling stalwart also stated that Iyer has to work on these issues to fix before the commencement of the 20-20 world cup which is to be played later in the end of this year.

I have seen him getting into strange positions when it comes to speed – Steyn

“It’s something he has to work on, just finding areas where he can score more boundaries off the seamers, I have seen him getting into some pretty strange positions when it comes to speed, especially this past Indian T20 League. Knowing that the World Cup is going to be in Australia at the back end of this year, he will have to combat that – facing a lot more seamers than spinners,” Steyn was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

Speaking of Iyer’s stats in T20I, then it is quite different from the current phase he is going through. The 27-year-old has a better record against the seamers in comparison to the spinners. He has scored runs with an average of 41.75 against the pacers since January 2021. On the other hand, he has an average of 35.77 against the spinners.

To note, Shreyas Iyer has also had some good outings in the 2022 edition while playing for Kolkata. Batting in 14 innings of all 14 matches he played, Iyer scored 401 runs with an average of 30.85 having three half-centuries to his name.
