India Women won by 41 runs against Sri Lanka Women in the second match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that had low bounce and where there was a lot of help for the spinners.
Shafali Verma had a sedate start where she scored 10 from 11 balls with only one boundary in it, and Smriti Mandhana perished for six, being caught at long on trying to hit one straight back over the bowler’s head. India, with two dismissals in quick succession, were in a spot of bother. India needed some rearguard action, and they got it from Jemimah Rodrigues who scored a superb 76 off 53 balls with 11 fours and a maximum.
Harmanpreet Kaur also provided valuable support for Rodrigues as she scored a handy 33 off 30 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. This partnership took the score from 23-2 to a commanding 115-3. Dayalan Hemalatha and Richa Ghosh provided some big hits at the end to take India to a competitive total of 150-6 in their 20 overs. Oshadi Ranasinghe was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, picking up 3 wickets for 32 runs in her four-over spell.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka got off to a good start with Harshita Madavi scoring a quickfire 26 from 20 balls with five boundaries to her credit before she was run out. Chamari Athapahthu could not get going as she scored a laborious 5 from 11 deliveries before she got out to Deepti Sharma in the fourth over. Shehani was next in, but she was run out by Deepti. Hasini Perera was the only one in the Sri Lankan batting lineup who put up a fight and got three boundaries in her 30 off 32 balls but she also fell prey to Deepti.
Pooja Vastrakar and Hemalatha combined to take 2 wickets each as the Sri Lankan innings got further derailed and there was no coming back after that as Hemalatha picked up one more wicket to round things up. This was a very comprehensive performance from India as they beat Sri Lanka by a considerable margin of 41 runs.
