Sunday marks the 12-year anniversary of India’s famous World Cup glory in 2011. The World Cup was hosted in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and this was the third time that the World Cup was hosted in India. The two previous instances were in 1996 and 1987. India and Sri Lanka were strong on their home turf and made it to the final. The big game was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The toss happened twice because it is believed that Kumar Sangakkara called “hails” by accident.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. The islanders did not get off to the best of starts as they lost Upul Tharanga early with Sri Lanka having only 17 on board. Tillakratne Dilshan made 33 off 49 balls with three fours. He was dismissed by Harbhajan Singh when he tried to up the ante. The rebuilding act was done by Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara. The left-hander scored 48 off 67 balls with five fours.

The star of the show for Sri Lanka was Jayawardene. He made a sparkling 103 off 88 balls. The right-hander hit 13 fours. His knock held the Sri Lankan innings together. The Islanders got the finishing touch from Nuwan Kulsekara and Thisara Perera. Kulasekera made 32 off 30 balls with one four and one six. Perera scored 22 off 9 balls with three fours and one six. Sri Lanka made 274-6 in their 50 overs.

Gautam Gambhir scored a match-winning 97 with the bat for India

Yuvraj Singh picked up 2-49 in his 10 overs. India needed 275 to win the game and lift the World Cup. India got off to the worst possible start. The Men in Blue lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Sehwag was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Tendulkar was dismissed lbw for 18 by Lasith Malinga after playing two eye pleasing shots. India were rocked early at 32-2.

Just when India were sinking, they found two heroes in Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli. Gambhir made a stellar 97 off 122 balls with nine fours. Virat Kohli started rebuilding the innings for India. Kohli scored 35 off 49 balls with four fours. When Kohli was dismissed, MS Dhoni promoted himself up the order ahead of an in form Yuvraj.

The Indian captain at the time came and scored a match-winning unbeaten 91 off 79 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Gambhir and Dhoni had a great partnership. The left-hander was dismissed by Perera when he was on 97. Dhoni smashed all the Sri Lankan’s.
