Australia are finally off the mark as they beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in their third game of the ODI World Cup 2023. The win for Pat Cummins and his side comes at the right time as they were placed at the bottom of the table coming into the game on Monday.
Kusal Mendis won the toss and chose to bat first and made two changes to his side. Lahiru Kumar and Chamika Karunaratne came into the team. Australia, on the other hand, made no changes to their side. Regular skipper Dasun Shanaka was back home in Sri Lanka after injury had ended his ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. Matheesha Pathirana was dropped due to his bad form and replaced by Lahiru Kumara.
Sri Lanka loses their third game in a row –
Chasing 210 to win, Australian openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh got off to a quick start. The pair added 24 runs in just 3 overs with 15 off them coming in the 1st over. Dilshan Madushanka then struck twice in the same over. Warner was out for 11 LBW to Madushanka. Steve Smith then faced five balls before falling in the same over for a duck.
Marsh and Labuschagne then put together 57 runs for the third wicket as the Aussies came back into the game. The 31-year-old opener scored 52 runs from 51 balls with the help of 9 fours. Josh Inglis then took over the run scoring as he hit 58 runs from 59 balls with the help of 5 fours and a six. Labuschagne dropped anchor to score 40 runs from 60 balls with 2 hits to the fence.
Glenn Maxwell finally found form and scored an unbeaten 31 runs off 21 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Stoinis was there with Maxwell on 21 runs off 10 balls with 2 fours and a six. Australia won the game by 5 wickets with 87 balls left to play.
Earlier Kusal Mendis with 78 and Pathum Nissanka with 61 gave the Lankans a flying start. The innings though took a turn for the worse when Adam Zampa with 4/47 ran through the Sri Lankan batting unit. From 165/2 Sri Lanka lost 8 wickets for 44 runs to be bowled out in the 44th over.

Sri Lanka has not beaten Australia in eight matches in the ODI World Cup since the 1996 WC final. This is also the most wins against an opponent (9) by any team in the ODI World Cups.

Well played Australia 🇦🇺 back on the track! Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 bowlers tried their best, but score was very low to defend.
