Australia is set to take on India in the World Test Championship final from 7-11 June 2023 at the Oval, England. For the second consecutive year, India will have a chance to win this trophy after losing to New Zealand in the previous final. Meanwhile, Australia will look to clinch the title and redeem themselves after losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to India.

Australia has announced its 17-man squad for the first two Ashes Tests and the WTC final. The team will be led by Pat Cummins, while Steve Smith will be his deputy. The squad includes David Warner, who managed to secure a place despite his poor form in the recent games. Several players, including Marcus Harris, Josh Inglis, and Mitchell Marsh, earned a recall to the team, while Cameron Bancroft failed to make the cut despite being the highest scorer in the Marsh Sheffield Shield.

Australia’s selection panel chair, George Bailey, commented on the squad, saying, “The UK is a very different assignment from our most recent tour of India and some of the changes are based upon the conditions we are anticipating.” He added, “We see value in revisiting the squad following the second Ashes Test given the short turnaround between the WTC Final and the first Ashes Test, along with the length of the tour.”

Bailey also mentioned the value of having depth and flexibility within the team’s skillsets, stating that Harris, Inglis, and Marsh would provide just that. The chair concluded, “The World Test Championship is the culmination of more than two years of consistent performance at Test level by the team and the individuals involved, leading into an Ashes series which is always highly anticipated.”

Australia will be banking on their pacers to tackle India in English conditions, as the team looks to capture their first World Test Championship title. With experienced players like Steve Smith, Warner, and Cummins in the mix, Australia will hope to overcome India’s challenge and emerge as champions. However, with India’s strong team and recent victory over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the final promises to be an exciting clash between two top-class sides.
