There were talks of ‘aggressive intent’ ahead of the 20-20 World Cup from the Indian team. All it could yield however was a mediocre campaign from the Rohit Sharma-led side.

Although Team India reached the semi-final of the mega event, their campaign was never confidence-inspiring. In their curtain raiser event, India were taken across the finish line by a sensational Virat Kohli who single-handedly brought victory into India’s favour. Against Bangladesh, India found help in the rain that shifted the momentum in Men in Blue’s favour.

When faced with the first strong opponent, India faltered and lost to South Africa. Their next opponent, England, gave them a thumping defeat of 10 wickets in the 20-20 World Cup semi-final.

After the cloud of hype cleared, India’s problems were laid bare in front of the world and questions are now being asked of the players, team management as well as the board. Former player Sunil Gavaskar has opined the same on India’s cricketing structure and raised questions about India’s support staff.

“In 1983 World Cup, we had one manager. Same in 1985. When the team won in 2011, there weren’t many people as well. I’m surprised the number of support staff is higher than the team members. Players get confused about whom to listen to,” Gavaskar told Aaj Tak. The legendary player has suggested that players must be confused listening to a lot of advice in the dressing room.

“Mujhe samajh nahi aata ki jab aapke paas Rahul Dravid jaise duniya ke mahaan ballebaaz hain, tab aapko aur ek batting coach ki kya zarurat hai? (I don’t understand, when you have such a legendary batter like Rahul Dravid, why do you need a batting coach?). Dravid says something, and Vikram Rathour says something else, and that leads to confusion. We need to understand how many members we need in the support staff),” he added.

India will now face New Zealand in a three-match ODI and T20I series in New Zealand.
