One of the most cherished rivalries in the game of cricket has taken on a new aura as of late because of the unpredictable nature of the ongoing Ashes. Some people were surprised by Ben Stokes’ choice to bowl first at Old Trafford in Manchester, a location where no side has ever won a Test after inviting the opposite team to bat first.

The first day of the fourth Ashes Test was chaotic, with England taking wickets just in time to keep Australia in the game whenever it appeared that they might take control. Thanks to fifty valuable runs from Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh, the visitors finished the day at 299/8. With the bowling, Chris Woakes distinguished himself by taking four wickets. But after a steady start, and looking to score as many runs as possible, the visitors finally bundled out for 317.

But the England batters started in their usual fashion of โ€˜Bazballโ€™ despite the ball seaming around. Mitchell Starc drew the first blood went he dismissed Ben Duckett (1) but nothing changed as Moeen Ali (54) and Zak Crawley (189) had different ideas as they took the attack back to the opposition. In the second session of day 2, the English batters went absolutely berserk when they scored 178 runs in just 25 overs which were bowled in that session at an astonishing strike rate of 7.12.

The hosts even lost the wicket of Ali in that session but Crawley and Joe Root looked firm at the crease as they thrashed the Australian bowlers all around the park leaving no stone unturned. The carnage was such that the Australian skipper, Pat Cummins had to turn to Travis Head in a hope of a miracle but he was taken on by the English batter as he ended the spell of six overs conceding 48 runs. Currently, the host have surpassed the first innings of Australians and the absence of Nathan Lyon can clearly be felt in the Australian lineup.

Let us have a look at some of the tweets from fans on this amazing feat from English batters;
