Moeen Ali has retired again from Test cricket after England won the fifth Test of Ashes 2023 at The Oval. The 36-year-old had come back from retirement to represent England in the Ashes 2023. With the completion of the Ashes, Ali has announced his retirement in the longest format of the game yet again.

Moeen Ali played a crucial role for England in winning two of the last three Tests. In the third Test in Headingley, Moeen Ali scored 21 runs in the first innings and picked two big wickets for Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the second innings. England won the Test by 3 wickets and made a comeback in the series.

The fourth Test at Old Trafford was again a must-win one for the home side. The match eventually ended in a draw due to the interruption of rain. Ali impressed everyone with his batting in the match. In the first innings of the Test, the right-arm off-spinner picked the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne and scored 54(82) after being promoted to number 3. The rain had the last laugh in the Test.

Crucial contribution in the fifth Ashes Test

In the final Test of the series at The Oval, Moeen shined yet again. With the bat, the Southpaw scored 34(47) and 29(38) respectively. But it was Moeen Ali the bowler, who impressed everyone in the Test. As Australia was cruising towards a victory on the last day with a score of 264/3 at one stage, Ali bowled a brilliant spell and picked the big wickets of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and of Pat Cummins.

England won the final Test by 49 runs and levelled the series 2-2. Stuart Broad, who had already announced his retirement from all formats of the game, was joined by Moeen Ali, who announced his retirement yet again. Ali joined the English squad as per the request of Ben Stokes through a WhatsApp chat. When asked if he will return again if Stokes asks, Ali smilingly replied, “If Ben Stokes messages me again for a series, I’ll simply delete it now” and concluded.
