Afghanistan and Pakistan, the other two teams in contention, now require near-miracles to qualify. Both teams needed New Zealand to lose yesterday to boost their hopes, but unfortunately for them, that did not happen. While they are still mathematically alive, it is only a matter of time before they are eliminated, realistically speaking.

Babar Azam and Co. will play their last game against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in what is the penultimate game of the group stage. Pakistan need a win to equal the Kiwis in terms of points. However, their net run rate is significantly inferior, so they will need a miraculous performance to topple the last edition’s runners-up.

Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals are slim, to say the least. Even if they bat first and score 300, they will need to bowl England out for just 13 runs. If they bowl first, they will need to chase down the target with approximately 284 deliveries to spare. Either way, it is a virtually impossible task.

Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram made a light-hearted suggestion on a live TV show yesterday that could help Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup. The 57-year-old said that Pakistan should bat first against England, score a massive total, and then lock their opponents in the dressing room and have them timed out.
