Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. Rajat Patidar has been named as his replacement, said the Indian Cricket Board in an official statement. Iyer has played 42 ODIs for India and has scored 1631 runs at an average of 46.60 and a strike rate of 96.50. He has two hundreds and 14 fifties against his name.
Iyer will head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further assessment. The extent of the injury was not disclosed by the Indian Cricket Board. The NCA will conduct Tests to determine the length of time that the 28-year-old will be out of action. In his last three ODIs against Sri Lanka Iyer made 28,28 and 38 before he was dismissed.
The injury comes at a time when the right-handed batter was looking to cement his place in the Indian ODI setup. He was looked at as a potential number-four batter in the ODI side for the Men in Blue at one point in time. He can also bowl part-time wrist spin which puts him into the category of part-time bowlers which are very few in the Indian Team at present.
Patidar on the other hand has been in good form with the bat. He has scored big runs for Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. Patidar has scored 438 runs in five matches for his state side with one hundred and three fifties. India will play the first ODI against the Kiwis on January 18 on Wednesday.
Here is the updated squad for the India vs New Zealand ODI Series.
Rohit Sharma Captain, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan wk, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KS Bharat (wk), Hardik Pandya vice-captain, Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Yet again wrong timing of injury as was the case with #Shreyas before 2021 T20 WC. Hopefully he remains number 1 choice for 2 down when he returns!

If Shreyas played 2019 WC then India would have won. So please don't try tricks with him this time. He is a key player after Virat and Rohit
