The West Indies and the Netherlands played out a game for the ages at the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. The game took place at Takashinga Sports Club in Harare. The Netherlands won the toss and chose to bowl. The West Indies were off to a flier courtesy of Brandon King and Johnson Charles. King made a cracking 76 off 81 balls with 13 fours. Charles struck 54 off 55 balls with nine fours and one six. Then against the run of play, Charles fell lbw to Kingma. Shamarh Brooks fell for a quick score, and then the Netherlands got the big wickets of King with the score at 163.

But the Men from the Caribbean were back on track as Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran had a wonderful partnership. Pooran hit a superlative unbeaten 104 off 65 balls with nine fours and six sixes. This was the left-hander’s third ODI hundred. Hope made 47 off 38 balls with three fours and two sixes. Pooran was going all guns blazing at one end. On the other side, West Indies lost Romario Sheperd and Jason Holder in quick succession. But Keemo Paul allied with Pooran as he struck an unbeaten 46 off 25 balls with four fours and two sixes to provide the finishing touches for the West Indies.

Teja Nidamanuru made 111 off 76 balls for the Netherlands

They finished with 374-6 in their 50 overs. The Netherlands were chasing a still target, but they were up to the task. Vikramjit Singh and MaxODowd provided a good start with a solid partnership at the top. Wesley Barresi and Bas de Leede made 27 off 34 balls and 33 off 47 balls with one four to keep the run-scoring on track. The boost was provided by Teja Nidamanuru, who spanked the West Indies attack all over as he made 111 off 76 balls with 11 fours and three sixes.

Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards had a game-changing partnership with Nidamanuru and scored 67 off 47 balls with six fours and one six. After he departed, Netherlands kept on punching with Logan van Beek, who scored 28 off 14 balls. This helped the Netherlands to get to 374-9. A wicket off the final ball meant that the game went into the Super Over. In the Super Over, the Dutch rode on van Beek’s all-round heroics as he whacked Holder for 30 runs in the super over.

Then the all-rounder came back with the ball to scalp two wickets. The Dutch had one of their best ODI victories in the 50-over format. The roaring crowd in Harare was treated to an absolutely amazing spectacle. The Netherlands will not forget what happened at Takashinga anytime soon.
