India faced off against Bangladesh in the first Test that kicked off on December 14, Wednesday and the KL Rahul-led team went on to win the game by 188 runs, post crushing the Bangla Tigers to 324 in their second innings, who were chasing a target of 513. It was Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara who shined in the second innings with their centuries and it was a maiden Test hundred for the former.

Gill has been fantastic right throughout the year and with his elegant technique, impressive style of play and incredible tenacity, he has made the best of the opportunities that selectors fetched him with throughout. Averaging around 70, Gill has amassed 638 runs in the ODI format this year with 1 century to his name. The batter has been proving his prowess in the Test format as well, fast becoming India’s trusted opener.

Mohammad Kaif, the former Indian cricketer, opened up on Gill and said that the batter is becoming the next big thing in Indian cricket. Further, Kaif lauded the right-handed batter for enjoying a great season and said that Gill cannot be dropped, even if Rohit Sharma returns, claiming that a talented batter cannot be kept outside for long.

It will be difficult to fit him in: Mohammad Kaif

Kaif further said that the Indian think tank would make a place, especially for Gill, in the case that the batter must sit out to make way for others. Highlighting his stupendous run in the Indian T20 League 2022 with the Gujarat franchise, Kaif kept no calm as he heaped praise on the youngster for his continued impressive performances.

“It is a tough call because of the template they are following in Test cricket. They are playing with five bowlers. You could have adjusted him if you were playing four bowlers. It will be difficult to fit him in. He might have to wait if Rohit Sharma comes back,” Kaif was quoted as saying to Sony Sports Network.

“He has the form. If I am Shubman Gill at the moment, I will not think if my selection will happen or not, I have done my job. No one can stop him from becoming an all-format player. Shubman Gill has the technique, scores runs consistently, and has the hunger. He scored in the Indian T20 League and won Gujarat the title, has scored centuries in ODI and Test cricket, so his 2022 has been fantastic,” said the former cricketer further.
