In a momentous occasion for Indian cricket, young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has ascended to the top of the T20I Bowling Rankings, dethroning the long-reigning Rashid Khan. Bishnoi has 699 rating points, as compared to Khan’s 692, which led to the change at the top of the table.
Bishnoi’s remarkable journey to the No. 1 spot has been fueled by his consistent and impressive performances over the past year. He made his debut in February 2022 and has picked up 34 wickets in 21 games so far. Recently, he was named the player-of-the-series after India’s 4-1 triumph against Australia in the 5-match T20I series. In a series which was excellent for batters, he claimed nine wickets in 5 games at a decent economy of 8.20.
Bishnoi first caught the eyes of fans, pundits and selectors in the U-19 World Cup in 2020 in which he topped the wicket-taking charts, picking up 17 wickets to help India end as the runners-up. Since then, he has been on the radar of the selectors as he possesses a unique skill set, which batters find tough to handle.
Bishnoi’s achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a significant moment for Indian cricket. It demonstrates the depth and talent of Indian spin bowling, which has traditionally been a strength of the national team. With Bishnoi at the forefront, the future of Indian spin bowling looks bright, and fans can expect to see him continue to dominate the world stage for years to come. He will now be looking to put up a good show in the T20Is against South Africa in a bid to cement his place in the T20 World Cup which will be held in June.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav continues to remain on top of the rankings as far as batting is concerned. He had a decent series following a poor World Cup campaign in which he struggled to make an impact. Surya’s next assignment, like Bishnoi, will be the T20Is in the Rainbow Nation.
