In the second last game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, eliminated teams, England and Pakistan played each other in Kolkata. Ahead of the game, the Three Lions were coming off a win after losing five back-to-back games. On the other hand, despite winning two back-to-back games, the Green Brigade were pretty much out of the semis race due to a near-impossible task at hand.
On top of that, the Three Lions skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to bat first. With this, the already distant dream became more distant for the 1992 World Cup winners. For only the second time in the tournament, the England openers, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan provided a great start with 82 runs in 13.3 overs. While Malan got 31 runs, Bairstow scored his first fifty of the tournament.
At 108/2, the likes of Ben Stokes and Joe Root, who scored a fifty each put together 132 runs for the fourth wicket. Despite losing a few wickets in the last few overs, the team reached 337/9 with Buttler, Harry Brook, and David Willey playing cameos. For the former champions, Haris Rauf took three wickets while Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr took two each. Iftikhar Ahmed also took a wicket.
In reply, the 1992 winners needed to chase down 338 runs in just 6.4 overs, i.e. 40 balls. Common sense prevailed, the team wasn’t going to qualify for the semis. After 6.4 overs, they were 30/2. With this, New Zealand became the fourth team to qualify for the semis against India on November 15.
Meanwhile, in the chase, the team was never in the chase. After losing two wickets for 10 runs, the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan put together 51 runs for the fourth wicket but the team wasn’t in the game. In the end, Haris Rauf scored 35 off 23 balls but the team was bowled out for 240 runs, losing the game by 93 runs. David Willey ended his international career with three wickets and 100 wickets in his ODI career.
