The England cricket team’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup has been nothing short of a nightmare. The defending champions find themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table, with little hope of qualifying for the semi-finals. This dismal performance has left fans and experts alike in disbelief, as the team trails behind traditionally smaller cricketing nations like Netherlands, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

As England’s World Cup campaign teeters on the brink of elimination, an additional blow has struck the team and its supporters. England speedster, David Willey, has announced that this tournament will mark his farewell to international cricket. The left-arm seamer made his ODI debut for England in 2015 and quickly established himself as a valuable asset to the team.

Willey’s international career includes 70 one-day internationals and 43 T20 matches, with his performances contributing significantly to England’s limited-overs success. Notably, he was part of the squad that secured victory in the 2019 World Cup. However, his recent omission from England’s central contracts roster was a clear sign that his international career was nearing its end.

Taking to Twitter to share the news, David Willey wrote, “I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of International cricket at the end of the World Cup.”

The last dance for David Willey

Willey went on to express his immense pride in representing his country and thanked his family for their unwavering support throughout his cricketing journey. He acknowledged the highs and lows of his career and emphasized that his decision was not influenced by England’s performance in the World Cup.

He concluded his heartfelt announcement by stating, “I feel I still have a lot more to give on and off the field while I am still playing my best cricket, and my decision has nothing to do with our performance during the World Cup. I’m sure everybody who knows me does not doubt that, whatever my involvement in the remainder of this campaign, I will give my everything and more! That’s the only way I know.”

They hope to see him leave the international stage on a high note, despite the team’s challenging situation in the tournament.
