In the midst of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, teams are not leaving any stone unturned in their pursuit of success. While talent and hard work are crucial, the element of luck can also play a significant role in determining a team’s fate. The New Zealand cricket team, currently in Dharamshala for their upcoming match against arch-rivals Australia, sought to secure some good luck by meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
The meeting between the New Zealand cricket team and the Dalai Lama took place at his residence in McLeod Ganj, India, on Tuesday. The Blackcaps are gearing up to face Australia at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium on Saturday. As they prepared for this crucial encounter, the New Zealand team paid a visit to the revered spiritual leader.
The Dalai Lama himself shared a picture of the meeting, writing, “HHDL meeting with players and their families of the New Zealand cricket team at his residence in Dharamsala, HP, India on October 24, 2023.” This interaction added a spiritual touch to the team’s World Cup campaign.

The New Zealand team had previously experienced the picturesque setting of the HPCA Stadium when they faced India. However, they fell short in that match as Virat Kohli’s remarkable performance led India to a comfortable victory, maintaining their unbeaten streak.
In that match, paceman Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul and another batting masterclass by “Chase Master” Virat Kohli secured a four-wicket win for India, ending the team’s 20-year losing streak against New Zealand in ICC events.
The gesture of the New Zealand cricket team in meeting the Tibetan spiritual leader with their families has been widely appreciated by fans across the country. It reflects the team’s determination to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of success.
New Zealand is hoping to harness all the luck they can muster in their quest to lift the World Cup trophy. They have faced heartbreak in the past two World Cups, losing in the finals to Australia in 2015 and England in 2019. Meeting the Dalai Lama is a unique approach to infusing their campaign with positive energy and good fortune as they strive to break the curse of World Cup final defeats.
