India and West Indies locked horns in the second Test match in Trinidad. Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and chose to bat. India ended Day 1 on 288-4. It was a great start for India in the first session as 121 runs were scored by the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rohit helped himself to fluent innings of 80 off 143 balls with 9 fours and two sixes. Jaiswal continued on his merry way as he made a quickfire 57 off 74 balls with nine fours and one six,
While the first session belonged to India, Jaiswal was dropped by West Indies’ Alick Athanazel. In the second session, the West Indies came fighting back. Jaiswal was dismissed by Jason Holder for 57 when he tried to go after a wide delivery. The left-hander was caught by debutant Kirk McKenzie. Shubman Gill played two good shots by did not last long as he was caught behind by Joshua Da Silva off Kemar Roach. Rohit then shortly followed suit as he was beaten through the gate by Jomel Warrican.
India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane looked all at sea as he hung around and made just 8 runs off 36 balls. Rahane was cleaned up by a peach of a delivery bowled by Shannon Gabriel. The Men in the Caribbean picked up 4 wickets and gave away just 61 runs in the second session. The Men in Blue had suffered back-to-back jolts and were in a precarious position when Ravindra Jadeja joined Virat Kohli at the crease. Kohli was in his element as the cover drives and straight drives came elegantly off his bat.
There was surety in his footwork and he looked like a man on a mission in his 500th International match. Kohli ended Day 1 on an unbeaten 87 off 161 balls with eight fours. Ravindra Jadeja finished Day 1 on an unbeaten 36 off 84 balls with four fours. The 106-run- partnership of 201 balls helped India to weather the storm. The two complemented each other well as India ended the Day on a high note and transferred the pressure back onto the West Indies.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:
