It was the final of the 1996 ODI World Cup in Lahore between Australia and Sri Lanka. Australia was considered favourites to win. Batting first, Australia was going well at one stage. The duo of Mark Taylor and Ricky Ponting was batting well with a 101-run stand for the second wicket. Aravinda De Silva stepped up to the occasion and dismissed both the batters. De Silva also got rid of Ian Healy and bowled a sensational spell on the big day.

242 was the target for Sri Lanka. Till then, the chasing side had not won a World Cup final. To dent the confidence of Sri Lanka further, the opening batters Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana were dismissed for 9 and 6 runs respectively. De Silva stepped up with the bat as well. The middle-order batter played a sensational knock and scored an unbeaten 107 runs in 124 balls, which helped Sri Lanka to win the final almost all by himself.
