The second match of the Asia Cup 2023 took place at Pallekele between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The coin went the way of the Bangla Tigers as they chose to bat. They did not get off to the best of starts as they lost Tanzaid Hasan for a second ball duck when he was out lbw to Maheesh Teekhshana. Mohammad Naim was caught by Pathum Nissanka off Dhanajaya de Silva for 16 off 23 balls with three fours. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan did not last long as well. He was caught by Kusal Mendis off Matheesha Pathirana for 5 off 11 balls with one four.

The Bangladesh youth sensation Towhid Hirdoy played a meek innings of 20 off 41 balls before he was out lbw by Dasun Shanaka. Mushfiqur Rahim was also unsuccessful in weathering the storm as he was Pathirana’s second victim. While the other batters flattered to deceive,  Najmul Hossain Shanto showed a lot of resilience and scored a cracking 89 off 122 balls with seven fours on a tough pitch.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahiedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman were all back in the hut as the lower order from Bangladesh failed to put up a fight. Pathirana with his Malingaesque action took 4-32 in his 7.4 overs. Theekshana also bowled a great spell as he picked up 2-19 in his eight overs, De Silva, Shanaka and Dunith Wellalage all picked up 1 wicket each in their respective spells.

In the run chase, Bangladesh struck early as Sri Lanka faltered at the start. The Islanders lost Dimuth Karnaratne when he was castled by Taskin Ahmed for 1 of 3 balls. then Nissanka was caught by Rahim off Shoriful Islam with 14 off 13 balls with one four.   Mendis was the third wicket to fall as he was cleaned up by Shakib. At 43-3, Sri Lanka were in a spot of bother. Sadeera Samarawickrama came in at number three and made 51 off 86 balls with six fours before he was stumped by Rahim off Hasan.

He was ably supported by Charith Asalanka who made a valuable unbeaten  62 off 92  balls with five fours and one six. Bangladesh picked up another wicket when Shakib castled De Silva for 2 off 7 balls.  Shanaka was there to finish the job along with Aslanka as the Islanders won by 5 wickets.
