‘I would have preferred if Rohit…’ – Ian Chappell gives his verdict on Dasun Shanaka’s run-out appeal being withdrawn

Rohit Sharma was not able to win an Asia Cup title in 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. India also crashed out of the 20-20 World Cup against England in Australia. The right-handed batter has also not indulged in any controversies. One of Rohit’s decisions, however, created a wedge across the cricketing fraternity.

During the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma withdrew a runout appeal of Dasun Shanaka at the non-striker’s end when he was on 95. The Sri Lanka skipper was found outside the crease at the non-striker’s end when he was run out by Mohammed Shami, but the appeal was later withdrawn because of Rohit’s intervention. As per the rules, Shanaka was out legitimately, but because of the Indian skipper’s decision, he could get to his century. The decision was hotly debated.

Cricket chooses the complicated solution-  Ian Chappell on the non-striker run-out

“Two major cricket controversies – run outs at the bowler’s end and catches referred to the third umpire – have reared their ugly head again, creating further headaches that should’ve been alleviated long ago. The run out at the bowler’s end could have and should have been resolved easily. The original law was more than adequate and should never have been changed. It’s a reminder that there are generally two solutions to a problem – a simple one and the other more complicated,” Chappell wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

“Cricket is renowned for choosing the complicated solution. Attempting a run out at the bowler’s end without warning a batsman is not unsporting. Appealing for a catch that a fielder knows he’s caught should not be subjected to crowd booing as it’s legal. In the Guwahati game against Sri Lanka, I’d have preferred if Indian captain Rohit Sharma had enforced, rather than rescinded, the runout appeal against his opposite number Dasun Shanaka,” Chappell reflected on the incident.

India, after losing back-to-back ODI series against New Zealand in December and against Bangladesh on their home turf, bounced back to win the ODI series against Sri Lanka and then against New Zealand, which has catapulted the side to No. 1 in the 50-over format. India will now shift their focus to the Border- Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
