The FIFA World Cup 2022 has been marred with controversy ever since Qatar was awarded the hosting rights way back in 2010. Right after Qatar’s bid was approved by FIFA, a whistle-blower revealed that FIFA board members were bribed with money and other expensive gifts in order to allow hosting rights.

Bribing however wasn’t the end of the controversy surrounding the Qatar World Cup. It has been reported by many credible sources that a deeply exploitative network of low-wage migrant workers was used to build the infrastructure for the FIFA World Cup.

Reports say that around 2 million migrant labourers were used for the construction of the stadiums and other infrastructure required to host the World Cup. Many reports also suggest that as many as 6500 workers from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka died in Qatar since 2010.

Non-profit organisation Amnesty International has also reported human rights violations of migrant labourers including wage theft, dangerous working conditions, excessive working hours, physical and sexual abuse and many other such atrocities.

Many organisations and media houses have also alleged Qatar of using the FIFA World Cup 2022 to ‘sportswash’ its poor human rights record. Qatar for example curtails the rights of LGBTQ people and criminalises sexual intercourse between people of the same sex.

Qatar had also gone back on its promise to allow rainbow flags and clothes to the stadiums. Since the games started, fans have been checked for rainbow symbols and have been disallowed to carry hats, T-shirts and other items with a rainbow on them.

7 European countries who had earlier pledged to wear ‘One Love’ armbands in support of LGBTQ people have also been asked to reconsider their plans or face stringent actions.

Given so many controversies surrounding the $220 billion Qatar World Cup, many have vowed to boycott the mega event. #BoycottQatar2022 has been trending ever since the World Cup 2022 began on November 20th.

Let’s look at what fans have to say about Qatar hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022.
