The Indian team has had a lot of problems in the last few months due to the injuries of some of the key players and the unfortunate accident of Rishabh Pant. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah could not make the Indian squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup due to injuries. Toward the end of 2022, Pant suffered an accident, which dented India to a huge extent.
With big tournaments like the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup to start soon, India has lost the services of some of its key players again due to injuries. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul injured themselves at a crucial time and are unsure of making it to the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. While KL Rahul is deemed fit, there are questions about Iyer’s availability for the tournament.
Even if both the middle-order batters are available for the selection, they have not had enough match practice before the big tournaments, which is again a matter of concern for the Indian team. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant probably needs some more time to be match fit, which keeps him out of contention for the Asia Cup 2023 squad.
Alternatives for KL Rahul in ODIs
Jasprit Bumrah is announced as the Indian captain for the T20I series against Ireland. While Hardik Pandya will be rested for India’s tour of Ireland, it will be a good opportunity for Bumrah to have some match practice. But the lack of fully fit middle-order batters, who were the regulars in the side like Iyer and Rahul, remains a matter of concern for Team India.
KL Rahul will be a big miss, as he could keep the wickets. In his absence, it is difficult to choose a wicketkeeper batter in the middle order. While Sanju Samson can be a like-to-like replacement, some of the former Indian cricketers think otherwise. RP Singh, the former T20 World Cup winner, said that in case of KL Rahul’s unavailability, Ishan Kishan should be in the side at number 5.
