After a disastrous start to their World Cup campaign, Australia have staged a remarkable comeback, winning four consecutive matches. They are now well-positioned to qualify for the semi-finals alongside India, South Africa, and New Zealand. With three group-stage matches remaining against England, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, Australia will be eager to avoid any missteps and maintain their momentum. Their victories over Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands were emphatic, but their victory against the Kiwis in their previous match would have brought them the most joy. This is because they were severely challenged and yet prevailed in a close contest.

Australia will next face a struggling England side at the picturesque Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While this match was eagerly anticipated before the tournament began, its significance has waned as England’s elimination looms.

Huge blow for Aussies ahead of clash against Poms

However, ahead of the game against their arch-rivals, the Aussies have been dealt with a major setback as their star all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the game owing to a concussion that he developed following a fall from the back of a golf cart. He is set to be sidelined for around six days owing to concussion protocols.

Maxwell has had a decent tournament so far, with 196 runs in six innings, including a record-breaking 40-ball century against the Netherlands. He has also been effective with the ball, exploiting conditions that favour his bowling style. Maxwell’s unavailability means that one of Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis will come into the playing 11 for the clash on November 4. Additionally, Marnus Labuschagne is expected to retain his place in the lineup.

“They’ll be a small reshuffle, clearly, around the back end of our batting and no doubt that compromises a bit of our bowling and the way Glenn has performed with the ball. There’s also no doubt it leaves us a fraction exposed at the back end in terms of how Glenn’s been performing but Marcus Stoinis does become available, all things going well at training today”, head coach Andrew McDonald said.
