Bindyarani Devi clinched a Silver medal in the Women’s 55kg category to give India their fourth medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Devi won Silver after successfully lifting 86kg in her third attempt in the snatch round and a massive 116 kg in the clean and jerk to lift a total of 202 kg in Women’s 55kg.
After the event, Devi said that her performance at the mega event was her career best. Talking to ANI, Devi said, “I am very happy with my performance. I am playing in the first games of my career and I am very happy that I won the silver medal in this.”
Talking about her impressive performance at the CWG 2022, Bindyarani Devi said, “I’m very happy to get a silver in the first time of playing CWG. Today was my life’s best performance… gold slipped out of my hand. When I was at the podium, I wasn’t at the centre, will do better next time.”
The 23-year-old has already set her sights on the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and has vowed to try her best in the upcoming games. Speaking of the same she said, “My next targets are national games, World Championship, Asian Games and then the 2024 Paris Olympics. I’ll do better in them.”
Weightlifting has been India’s only medal-winning sport at the 2022 Commonwealth Games so far. Lifters have brought five medals in the sport comprising of two golds, two silvers and a bronze.
Mirabai Chanu was the first Gold winner this year, with 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga coming with the second on 31st August. Sanket Sargar came up with India’s first medal, a silver in Men’s 55kg earlier. Gururaja Poojary is the sole bronze winner for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Australia leads the points tally with a massive 32 points while India stays at sixth with a total of five points. India is hopeful of a better performance than the last time. They finished third in the 2018 Commonwealth games.
