The Indian team ended their Super-Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 with a loss to Bangladesh. The game had no real bearing as far as the tournament was concerned. India are already in the finals as they are set to take on Sri Lanka. Bangladesh, on the other hand, were already knocked out of the tournament in the early phase.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first as India made five changes to the team. The biggest glaring change was that of Virat Kohli who was rested for the game. Tilak Varma made his ODI debut and batted at number three. With the final and the World Cup ahead Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Siraj were rested. Surya Kumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Mohammad Shami, and Prasidh Krishna were the replacements.

Groundsman hilariously scares Virat Kohli –

The Indian team reserves were waiting by the boundary line for the start of the Indian chase. That’s when Virat Kohli was spotted having a word with his teammates. The groundsman was clearing the ground on his hover-cart and drying the dew. The former Indian skipper was caught unawares and jumped a bit when the groundsman blew the horn.

Bangladesh batted first and 265/8 from their 50 overs. The star with the bat was Shakib Al Hasan who top scored with 80 off 85 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes. Shakib added 100 runs for the fifth wicket with Towhid Hridoy who scored 54. Nasum Ahmed scored 44 crucial runs while Mahedi Hasan scored 29 not out.

Chasing 266 to win, Tanzid Hasan Shakib gave Bangladesh a great start. The right-arm pace bowler first got Rohit Sharma for a duck. Then it was the turn of debutant Tilak Varma who shouldered arms and was out bowled for 5. KL Rahul (19) and Ishan Kishan (5) were out to leave India struggling at 94/4.

While the wickets fell at the other end, Shubman Gill waged a lone battle as he scored his 5th ODI ton. The right-hander was out for 121 off 133 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes. Gill also went past 1000 runs for the calendar year in ODI cricket.

Axar Patel then found form with the bat as he scored 42 off just 34 balls. The knock wasn’t enough as he perished when he was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman. Bangladesh won the game by 6 runs to register a win over India after 11 years in the Asia Cup tournament.
