When it comes to taking DRS reviews on the cricket field, it can be tricky. This can happen when you have big ticket batters like Virat Kohli at the crease. This is what happened to Steve Smith in the third ODI at Chennai. The incident took place in the 10th over of India’s innings. Australia speedster Sean Abott got the ball to move away from Kohli. To the naked eye, the ball appeared to miss the outside edge.

The Australian’s thought otherwise. They went for a big appeal. The umpire gave it not out, but Smith consulted a few fielders and took the DRS. Kohli had a smile on his face at the other end. When the Australian’s saw the replay, they understood why Kohli was smiling. They was a huge gap between bat and ball and Kohli’s bat was quite far away from the ball. The umpire did not need the assistance of ultra edge. He signalled to the on-field umpire to stay with his original decision of not out.

Kohli was brimming with laughter after he saw the replays. The Australian’s also had sheepish smiles on their faces. The were not so happy with taking the review in the end. Smith’s captaincy in the Chennai ODI was outstanding. The 33-year-old was sharp with his field placements and plotted the downfall of Hardik Pandya with an unusual field setting.

The Australian spinners were bang on in the second innings and exploited the spinning conditions to the fullest. Adam Zampa wrecked India with a four-wicket haul. He got great support from Ashton Agar who dismissed Virat Kohli and also Suryakumar Yadav for a first ball duck. The runs from the Australia tail enders proved to be invaluable with the bat and the margin of victory reflects the same.

This is the Men in Blues first series defeat at home since they lost to the Kangaroos in 2019 in a 2-3 series defeat. Zampa’s four wicket haul is the first for a visiting spinner since Ajantha Mendisn4/73 in Ranchi in 2014. Australia by virtue of winning this match and the series, become the number one ranked ODI side. This has been a great comeback from the Kangaroos after being one match down in the series.
