India have no time to waste as they embark on a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The new WTC cycle starts off with two Tests against the West Indies in their country. Then in December India will tour South Africa to play two Tests there between December 2023 to January 2024. After that, there is some role reversal as India have a lot of matches lined up at home. England will come to Indian shores to play a full action-packed series of five tests which will be played from January to February 2024.

Post that, India’s eastern neighbours come calling as they will play a two-match Test series from September to October 2024. Soon after New Zealand will pay a visit to India to play three Tests that will take place between October and November 2024. Then India will fly down to Australia for a high-octane 5 Test match series that will take place between November 2024 and January 2025. India are the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as they beat the Kangaroos 2-1 in March.

India lost two World Test Championship finals in two cycles against New Zealand and Australia

The Men in Blue have qualified in two WTC finals. But they have not been able to get the trophy. The Virat Kohli-led side lost the final to New Zealand in 2021. In 2023, the Rohit Sharma-led side lost to Australia by 209 runs at the Oval. Both the WTC finals took place in England. India have not been able to get their hands on a world title since 2013 when they won the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

When we look at the Indian Test team at present, it appears to be approaching a transition phase and it is interesting to see how India will adapt to it. When it comes to the West Indies Tests, Cheteshwar Pujara is not a part of the side. Ajinkya Rahane has been reinstated as vice-captain of the Test side for the West Indies tour. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been handed call-ups into the Test setup.
