The veteran pacer Tim Southee picked up a hat-trick against India in the second T20 match against India on Sunday at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. This was Southee’s second hat trick in the shortest format. The 33-year-old also joined the former legendary Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga as the only two bowlers to have two hat-tricks in the T20 internationals.

Tim Southee picked up the hat trick in the final over of the first innings. He took Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and Washington Sundar in three consecutive deliveries in the final over and restrict the Indian innings under 200. Southee conceded 34 runs in his 4 overs at an economy rate of 8.50.

Surya’s sensational ton overshadowed Southee’s hat-trick

However, Southee’s hat-trick couldn’t help the team win the match as Suryakumar Yadav scored a brilliant inning of 111 runs in just 51 deliveries and help India to reach a fighting total. India started their innings with the new opening pair Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant. Ishan helped India to get a strong start by hitting some glorious boundaries in the powerplay. However, the opening partnership did not help much the team.

Pant failed to deliver a good start to the innings. After struggling against the fast bowlers, Pant decided to send the bowl out of the park but ended up giving his wicket to the pacer Lockie Ferguson. But Surya took the responsibility to lift the innings up. He did not take too much time to settle and started playing aggressively which help him to get his second T20I ton.

After putting up a good total of 191, India started the next innings by taking Finn Allen’s in the very first over. After that, the NZ skipper Kane Williamson and Devon Conway put up a good partnership of 56 runs. But that was not enough for them to win as Washington Sundar broke the partnership by taking Conway’s wicket. The New Zealand innings scattered like a pack of cards and they ended up losing their all wickets in a total of 126 runs only and lost the match by 65 runs.
