In the Mumbai franchise’s first game of the Indian T20 League 2023, Tilak Varma stood out as the team’s best player. He scored an unbeaten 84 off just 46 deliveries to help his team reach a significant total of 171/7. At one point, the Rohit Sharma-led team was down 48/4.
However, Tilak Verma, who was called up to the India A team last year, demonstrated his ability to advance quickly and contributed a crucial hit. Despite playing some excellent shots, Tilak’s Helicopter Shot on the final delivery of MI’s inning was arguably the best of all. Tilak paid homage to MS Dhoni by playing his signature shot on the exact 12th anniversary of the 50-over World Cup championship match that Dhoni used to clinch India’s victory.

With the loss of Team India superstars Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma, along with marquee signing Cameron Green during the powerplay, Mumbai had the worst conceivable start to their innings. Suryakumar Yadav also fell short and was dismissed for fifteen. Tilak Varma was the lone warrior for Mumbai and got some decent partners at the end with Nehal Wadhera and Arshad Khan scoring some runs to add to the total as well.
Tilak seized over the reins and ensured that Mumbai would go on to surpass the 150-run threshold and post a significant total. Despite the M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s reputation as a batting-friendly venue, it will be difficult for Bangalore to complete the chase against a strong bowling assault.
In this match, Jofra Archer made his Mumbai start. Interestingly, the starting XI for the five-time Indian T20 League Champions featured three foreign players. At the start of the second inning, they introduced Jason Brehrendorff, their Impact Player. In favour of the pacer, Suryakumar Yadav was omitted. For Bangalore, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis have started the chase and have been looking solid. They would look to seize the first win for Bangalore in the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League.
