India suffered a hammering at the hands of Australia in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam. India were mauled by the Kangaroos by 10 wickets. The Indian top order was made to dance by Mitchell Starc. This dance from India only ended after the match. Starc picked up his 9th five-wicket haul in ODIs against India and had figures of 5-53 in his eight-over spell.

The left-armer accounted for the wickets of Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Rohit Sharma. After the match ended, this is what Rohit said after Suryakumar got out for a golden duck. “Surya has shown potential in white ball but he knows he needs to do well in ODI as I said, if one has potential, we need to give consistent run – with Iyer injured, the place is vacant, so he is getting a long run”. The statement does hold good but the fans felt that the backing is different for different players.

The Indian top order were reduced to 32-3 in the second ODI against Australia

While Suryakumar has played 22 matches and scored 433 runs at an average of 25.47. He has a strike rate of 102.36. The fans said that different rules apply to someone like Sanju Samson. The Kerala batter has scored 330 runs in 11 matches. He has an average of 66 and at a strike rate of 104.76. Samson has done well in the limited opportunities he has got. There was some opinion from the fans that Suryakumar is on the team because of Rohit. The two also play for Mumbai in the Indian T20 league which could be another reason for backing Suryakumar.

The fan’s said Samson has not been backed enough. India’s middle order has not been in the best of form. The Indian top order has suffered back-to-back collapses against Australia in the ODIs so far. India were 39-4 in the first ODI. In the second ODI, India were 71-6. The first three batters departed at 32-3. India have also not combated the left-arm pace threat.

The Men in Blue will want to sort out their issues ahead of the ODI World Cup which will be held at home.  The 50 over Cup will be played on home soil for the first time since 2011. India will want to do well in home conditions and end their title drought since 2013.
