On 27 January 2023, the stage was set for Sania Mirza to end her Grand Slam career on a high. She and her partner Rohan Bopanna took on the Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Mataos in the final of the Australian Open mixed doubles trophy. But, they failed to pull off the match in their favor.

Sania Mirza and Rohan lost the match 6-7(2) 2-6. Hence, they settled for the runners-up position and Sania Mirza ended her Grand Slam career with six titles. However, after the match, Sania was seen having tears during the post-match presentation. She also claimed that there would be no better place to end her Grand Slam career than the Australian Open.

Here is the shared video:

“I’m able to say I’m leaving the game because I want to, on my own terms,” – Sania Mirza

During the post-match presentation, Sania Mirza said: “I’m able to say I’m leaving the game because I want to, on my own terms. Today I’m here, sitting after a Grand Slam final, knowing that I still have the level to make it to a Grand Slam final. I’m choosing to say that I want other things, and that is very important for me.”

She said: “I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss walking on big courts, miss competing and trying to win, and, you know, in some way even losing, looking back on the court and fighting and coming back again. But I still feel I have a couple more tournaments and I want to play. But it’s tough for me to accept in this very moment that I’m not coming back here because I have been coming here for, I don’t know, 22 years, 20 years.”

“Rohan was my first-ever mixed-doubles partner at (aged) 14 and we won the nationals. It was a long time ago, 22 years ago, and I couldn’t think of a better person — he’s one of my best friends and best partners — to finish my career here and to play the final. There’s no better place for me, or person for me, to finish my Grand Slam career,“ Sania Mirza concluded.
