WATCH- Mumbai Indians pay tribute to their ‘Forever Captain’, Rohit Sharma in special video

With an eye on the future, the Mumbai Indians today announced Hardik Pandya as the new captain of the franchise. Pandya only recently returned to MI, his first IPL team courtesy of a historic draft. Pandya made his IPL debut back in 2015 and went on to represent the Mumbai-based franchise for seven years before moving to the Gujarat Titans. He did an exceptional job for the Titans, winning them the IPL in their debut season in 2022 before taking them to another final in the following year.

Pandya will take over the reins of MI from Rohit Sharma, who along with MS Dhoni, is the most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League. Rohit was appointed the skipper of the franchise mid-way through the 2013 season following a horrible run. He turned things around emphatically as MI went on to win the title. Rohit delivered four for trophies, cementing his legacy as arguably the best to have donned the ‘blue’ and ‘gold’ of MI.

From taking over a fledgling Mumbai Indians in 2013 to transforming them into a five-time champion dynasty, Rohit’s imprint on the franchise is undeniable. Rohit’s leadership transcended mere silverware. He fostered a culture of resilience and adaptability, seamlessly moulding a diverse squad into a cohesive unit that thrived under pressure. His calm demeanour on the field, coupled with his astute reading of the game, earned him the admiration of players and fans alike.

While Rohit’s reign as Mumbai Indians captain may have come to an end, his influence on the franchise and the IPL at large will continue to inspire for generations to come. He leaves behind a legacy that glitters brighter than any trophy, a testament to the true mark of a champion leader.

In an emotional video that they posted on their social outlets, the Mumbai Indians penned a heartfelt note for their outstanding leader, showing gratitude for his contributions and for all the laurels he brought to the franchise. “Ro, In 2013 you took over as captain of MI. You asked us to Believe. In victories & defeats, you asked us to Smile. 10 years & 6 trophies later, here we are. Our forever captain, your legacy will be etched in Blue & Gold. Thank you, Captain Ro,” they wrote.
