New Zealand defeated Bangladesh in an ODI in Bangladesh after 15 long years. In the first ODI in Dhaka, New Zealand broke the jinx against Bangladesh under the captaincy of Lockie Ferguson. But it was not even the biggest headline of the day. Something else took the cake from the match, which is being hailed as a great gesture and a moment of the spirit of sportsmanship.
Litton Das, the captain of Bangladesh, withdrew a run-out appeal from Hasan Mahmud, the bowler. In the first innings of the match, New Zealand was batting at a not-so-great position in the match. The visiting side was 219/8 after 45 overs. Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson were batting at that point in time. New Zealand needed something from their lower-order batters to stay alive in the match.
Mahmud bowled the 46th over of the match. The right-arm medium pacer saw that Sodhi was stepping out of the crease, which was against the rules of the game. The 23-year-old pacer dismissed the non-striker via run-out, which is called ‘Mankading’ in cricket. Following the dismissal, Sodhi was about to make his way back to the pavilion and in fact, had started his march back to the pavilion.
But in an interesting gesture, the Bangladeshi captain Litton Das called back the batter of New Zealand and withdrew the dismissal. Following the incident, Mahmud had a hug with Sodhi. The move of Das and Bangladesh received a lot of praise from the fans on social media. Many hailed it as a great display of sportsmanship. Ish Sodhi himself praised Litton for his move after the match.
It had a big impact on the game. In the last 4 overs of the match, New Zealand scored 35 runs. Ferguson and Sodhi were the batters in the middle. If not for withdrawing Sodhi, the visiting side could have potentially been bundled out for a lower total. But the sportsmanship from Das helped New Zealand to register a good total, and eventually win the match by 86 runs.
