Watch: Lionel Messi subjected to heavy booing and whistling from PSG crowd amidst rumours of his return to Barcelona

There are reports floating around that Lionel Messi might return to Barcelona. The World Cup winner was subjected to insane booing and whistling from the fans at PSG when they locked horns against Lyon. PSG’s recent form has not been good as they have suffered another loss in the hands of Olympique Lyon in Ligue 1. Olympique Lyon trounced PSG by a 1-0 margin.

Messi who had been a log time member of Barcelona made the move to PSG in 2021 owing to financial implications of Barcelona. He had a two-year contract with the French club which is set to expire this summer. The World Cup winner has not been in favorable terms for an extension with the club and it is widely speculated that he could make his way back to Barcelona and don their colours.

Lionel Messi has scored 24 goals for PSG across two seasons

When the playing XI of PSG was announced before the start of the match against Lyon, Messi was greeted with heavy booing and whistling from the PSG crowd. The boisterous crowd seemed to take all their anger on him. The fans did not hold back when Messi’s name was announced. This is reportedly the third time the PSG fans have given a hard time to Messi by booing him.

PSG suffered their second loss at home which happened on Sunday. Bradley Barcola from Lyon scored the solitary goal of the match in the 56th minute to help Lyon pull off a 1-0 win over the defending champions. Messi had changed hands from Barcelona to PSG in 2021. He played 33 matches for the club. Messi primarily starred in the Champions League and Ligue 1 matches.

He scored 11 goals and also 11 assists for the club. Messi then got his straps together for the 2022 season. The World Cup winner struck 13 goals and 13 assists in 24 Ligue 1 appearances. Messi also scored four goals in 7 UCL games. PSG did not make it to the round of 16 in the UCL. They lost against Bayern Munich 3-0 on aggregate.
