The Women’s Big Bash League has managed to carve its thread and create an identity of its own over the years. After being co-hosted along with the Men’s BBL now in recent years it has earned the status of being a standalone event.

Sydney Thunder who were in sixth position played Brisbane Heat who were in second place before the start of this encounter. They played the match at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Sydney won the toss and chose to bat first.

The batting card for the Sydney Women revolved around two people. Phoebe Litchfield scored a wonderful half-century off just 38 balls which was laced with nine boundaries in total. Amy Jones fought through and scored a laborious 24 off 21 balls with one four.

The other star batter for Sydney was Rachel Haynes who played a good knock at number four which had five fours in total. She made 38 from 30 balls. This allowed Sydney to reach a total of 139-7 in their 20 overs.

Nicola Hannock and Jess Jonnasen were the two most successful bowlers for Brisbane where they managed to pick up 2-25 and 2-20 in their four overs.

Brisbane won the rain hit encounter by three runs via DLS Method

In the second innings, Brisbane Openers Georgia Redmayne and Danielle Wyatt started slowly to what was not the biggest target. Redmayne scored 33 off 36 balls with three fours before she was shown the door by Lauren Smith. English import Wyatt played a slow run a ball 18 with one boundary before being dismissed by the experienced Lea Tahuhu. Tahuhu went on to pick 3-31 through the course of the match.

In the end, Brisbane clinched the rain-hit encounter by three runs and went top of the table after this win. But, what made headlines in the match was an incident that happened in the 10th over. The first ball was a full toss outside the off stump, but Harris was already in a position to play a scoop shot over the wicket-keeper which she did but it hit the keeper’s helmet on the way while playing the shot.

The ball ricocheted off the helmet, changed direction, and went to the backward point region where Amy Jones was waiting to take the catch. The ball was very loopy and it looked high enough to be called a no-ball. Harris looked at the umpire for a potential decision change but she was asked to walk back.

The commentators said that the ball deserved to be called dead because it struck the keeper’s helmet and was well above waist-high.
