Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is celebrating his 34th birthday today as wishes are pouring in from all over the world for the modern great. However, the excitement around Kohli’s birthday was at its highest even one day before his big day as Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell wished the star batter in advance. During a post-match interview after Australia beat Afghanistan by 5 runs in the 20-20 World Cup 2022, Maxwell wished his good friend.

Maxwell, who was reflecting on his performance in the Super 12 stage game against Afghanistan on Friday also dropped a heart-warming message for Kohli.

Maxwell starred in Australia’s victory with the bat

Kohli and Maxwell have been teammates at the Bangalore franchise for two seasons. Maxwell joined Bangalore after having a horrible season in Punjab in 2020 which saw him struggle and score just 108 runs from 14 matches. The following year, Maxwell hit top gear as he amassed 511 runs from 15 games at a strike rate of 144.10, a season where he hit six half-centuries.

At the Indian T20 League mega-auction, Maxwell was retained by Bangalore for INR 11 crores and scored 301 runs from 13 games in Indian T20 League 2022. Coming back to Australia vs Afghanistan match, Maxwell was awarded Player of the Match for his innings of unbeaten 54 off 32 which lifted Australia to 168/8.

Apart from his batting, he also took a smart catch to dismiss Najibullah Zadran. As Australia failed to defeat Afghanistan by a big margin, their hopes for qualification to the semi-finals now rest on the result of the England vs Sri Lanka game on Saturday.

Sri Lanka will have to beat England to remove the hurdles in Australia’s path towards the semi-final spot. Commenting on the precarious situation of his team, Maxwell said, “We’ll be following it (England vs Sri Lanka), we put ourselves in this situation, but hopefully Sri Lanka can do the job for us.”
