Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer has always been sceptical of the Indian great Virat Kohli. Although the former opener never revealed the exact reason for criticising the Indian batter often, there were a few rare occasions when the left-handed batter came forward to heap praise on the superstar.

Praising the batter for his heroic knock against Bangladesh in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 that saw the Indian team put on a mammoth total on the board, Gambhir said that it was because of the batter that India were able to put on the total. Further, Gambhir admitted to Kohli’s brilliance and said that he became the main hero once Suryakumar Yadav departed. For the unversed, the Indian star scored an unbeaten 64 against the Bangla Tigers in the rain-interrupted match that India won eventually by 5 runs by the DLS method.

He became the main hero of India: Gambhir

The former Indian cricketer also compared Kohli to other greats like Kane Williamson and Babar Azam and said that the batter is better than the active stars. Further, Gambhir said that the right-handed batter can be an aggressor and also an anchor simultaneously.

“In this batting lineup, Kohli has the role of an aggressor in the final ten overs, alongside being an anchor in the starting. When you see Babar Azam, it is not necessary that you can call them (other players) an anchor. Virat Kohli is much more than just an anchor. When the conditions are tough in the first 10 overs of the match and India loses wickets like today, Kohli built a partnership by playing second fiddle to KL Rahul. When Rahul was dismissed, he partnered with Suryakumar Yadav and became the main hero after Suryakumar’s dismissal,” Gambhir was quoted as saying.

“This is something you can only do when you have the ability. Very less players possess this ability to be both an anchor and an aggressor. Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, and Babar Azam don’t have this but Virat Kohli has,” he added.
