Over the years, the US Open has been one of the most open tournaments in tennis. Without a doubt, it is the tournament where no participant starts as the outright favorites to win in men’s singles. From 2008 to 2022, the tournament has seen 10 different champions, but none have defended a title. The Tennis legend Roger Federer was the last men’s player to achieve the feat in the tournament.
In the 2007 US Open finals, Federer beat Novak Djokovic in the final of the tournament. The following year, Federer beat Andy Murray and defended his title. 15 years since then, no men’s player has been able to defend their title in the tournament. The latest champion in the tournament is the young sensation, Carlos Alcaraz, who won his maiden Grand Slam title in the US Open.
‘To defend the title here is a goal for me’ – Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz achieved the feat at the young age of 19 years. The 20-year-old can become the first player in 15 years to defend the title in the US Open. Speaking about it, Alcaraz said “Well, of course. I watched the draw. I see the opponents I can (potentially) play against. But I am focused day by day, you know. Obviously, to defend the title here is a goal for me. I am looking forward to that,” and hoped to achieve the feat.
Alcaraz further added that he would love to be part of the elite club of defending the title at the US Open. “I know that nobody else has defended their title here since Roger Federer. So, I would love to be part of the tournament history with Roger Federer to be one of the fewest athletes to defend their title here. It is my main goal right now and I am looking forward to that,” said Alcaraz.
Since 2008, the likes of Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray, Marin Cilic, Stanislas Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, and Carlos Alcaraz have won the tournament once. The legends like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have won it 4 and 3 times respectively.
