The first T20I between Afghanistan and Pakistan was held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Imad Wasim was the highest scorer for Pakistan. He made 18 in an absolute batting no-show from the Men in Green. Pakistan got off to good start with Saim Ayub who scored 17 off 15 balls with two fours and one six. Once Mohammad Haris was dismissed by Naveen-ul-Haq for 17, it was all Afghanistan.
Fazalhaq Faraooqi picked up the wickets of Imad and Mohammad Haris. Azmatullah had Abdullah Shafique dismissed lbw. Tayyab Tahir was the fourth wicket to fall to Rashid Khan via a caught and bowled. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman dismissed Azam Khan for a two-ball duck and got rid of Shadab Khan for just a paltry 12. Mohammad Nabi dismissed Faheem Ashraf for just 2 off 8 balls and Naseem Shah got out hit wicket to Nabi. Afghanistan did not allow Pakistan to get going.
The Afghan bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals. The Pakistan batters were not up to the task. In the end, the Men in Green were kept down to just 92-9 in their 20 overs. The Pakistan batters could not get going and Afghanistan were all over them. In the second innings, Afghanistan were not under too much pressure as they were chasing a low score.
Ibrahim Zadram made 9 off 11 balls with one four before he was caught by Azam Khan off Ihsanullah. Gulbadin Naib fell for a two-ball duck without troubling the scorers. Rahamanullah Gurubaz made 16 off 17 balls with one four and one six. He was the third wicket to fall and Ihsanullah’s second victim. When Gurubaz fell at 27-3, Afghanistan were in a tough spot. Mohammed Nabi made an unbeaten run a ball 38 with three fours and one six.
Nabi received support from Najibullah Zadran who made 17 off 23 balls with two fours. Nabi hit the winning six for Afghanistan and finished it off in style for his side. This is the first time Afghanistan has beaten Pakistan in T20Is. Sharjah will host the last two T20Is. Afghanistan have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
