Shubman Gill lit up the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad with his magnificent innings of 208 off 149 balls with 19 fours and nine sixes. This allowed India to score 349-8. At 131-6 when it looked like India would run away with the game Michael Bracewell turned the match around with a stunning innings of 140 off 78 balls.

Gill batted with a lot of confidence and authority. He played a matured handed and took the Indian innings on his shoulders. He played a knock with such elegance and poise after Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 34 off 38 balls and Virat Kohli fell cheaply to Mitchell Santner for just 8. Kohli showered high praise for the Punjab batter and said that it was an innings of class.

He is a free flowing batter – Rohit Sharma on Shubman Gill

“I would call it outstanding. Especially considering that the next best score wasn’t even 40, and the fact that he got a double hundred was a knock at a very, very high level,” Kohli said in a video to the Indian Cricket Board. “I think he was totally in his element today and showed why so many people have been saying such great things about him for years. I wish him all the best. Hope he builds on this. Today it was just a privilege to watch him bat,” India captain Rohit said after the match.

Rohit was full of appreciation for Gill’s knock and lauded him. “Watching Gill bat is fantastic, clean striking and no aerial shots. We wanted to give him a run before the SL series the kind of form he was in. He’s such a free-flowing batsman,” Rohit added. Gill used the straight boundaries at Hyderabad to good effect and also switched gears later and sent the Kiwi bowlers on a leather hunt.

The right-handed batter became the youngest to score a double century.  He joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan to become the fifth Indian to score a double ton. He has been in great form in limited-overs cricket. He has started delivering the goods and also reaping the rewards of being backed by the Indian Team management.
