Former India captain Virat Kohli expressed his happiness with Bangalore launching a Women’s Indian T20 League franchise and took to Twitter to express his joy.

“Well played, RCB! So thrilled that my team has won the bid for the Bengaluru Women’s Premier League team. Can’t wait to cheer for our women in Red and Gold,” Kohli said in a tweet. Bangalore now have a men’s and women’s Indian T20 League team and also the same is the case with Delhi and Mumbai.

Bangalore also said in an interaction with ESPNcricinfo wherein they held back investing in other leagues overseas so that they could end up buying a women’s team for the upcoming Women’s Indian T20 League. “We held back all our investments in overseas teams to own a team that aligns with this philosophy and core value, and it gives us immense pleasure to have marked this accomplishment positively,” said Prathmesh Mishra, Bangalore franchise chairman.

“We have been following women’s leagues very closely and our scouting team has set their eyes on women cricketers for some time now, as part of Bangalore’s Hinterland scouting system, and it gives us immense joy to see it all coming together for a team that sets to play for the inaugural edition of women’s Indian T20 League in the country,” said Rajesh V Menon, vice president of Bangalore franchise.

Bangalore, unlike Chennai and Kolkata, have not invested in overseas franchise leagues such as the International League T20 (ILT20) in the United Arab Emirates and the SA20 in South Africa. The Kolkata franchise’s sister club is the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and the sister club of the Chennai franchise is Joburg Super Kings.
