The Gujarat Giants have announced a change in leadership ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, appointing former Australian batsman Michael Klinger as their new head coach. Klinger takes over the reins from Rachael Haynes, who led the Giants in their inaugural season last year.

Klinger, a veteran of 182 first-class, 177 List A and 206 matches, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He enjoyed a successful domestic career in Australia, captaining Western Australia to Sheffield Shield wins in 2014-15 and 2018-19. Though he never donned the Baggy Green, he represented various Big Bash League (BBL) franchises.

His coaching credentials are also impressive. Klinger served as an assistant coach for Melbourne Stars in the BBL and the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). He was also the head coach of the Perth Scorchers Women in the WBBL, guiding them to their maiden title in WBBL 07. Klinger will be supported by bowling coach Nooshin Al Khadeer and mentor Mithali Raj. Khadeer, a former Indian pacer, has extensive coaching experience in domestic cricket and with the Indian national team. Raj, the legendary Indian cricketer, brings her vast playing experience and tactical acumen to the table.

“Working with Michael will help bring out the best in the Gujarat Giants players. His expertise with the bat is also well-known, and will surely benefit some of the younger members of our team. We look forward to having Klinger in the dressing room. We are sure of attaining success with him as head coach,” Mithali Raj, the team’s mentor said after the appointment was officially made.

Giants hope for a change in fortunes!

The Gujarat Giants, who finished a disappointing last in the inaugural WPL season, are hoping for a turnaround in 2024 with the appointment of Michael Klinger as their new head coach. Klinger’s experience and success in domestic and international cricket, coupled with the support of Khadeer and Raj, has instilled optimism within the franchise that they can finally capitalize on their talented squad and challenge for the title.
