Zaka Ashraf, the potential successor to Najam Sethi as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has finally agreed to use the much-discussed “hybrid model” for the 2023 Asia Cup, which will take place in Pakistan as well as Sri Lanka in September. It should be mentioned that Zaka Ashraf initially turned down this model but has now accepted it after almost a day.
If Ashraf had not modified his position, the Asia Cup may have been played as a five-nation competition without Pakistan because the ACC executive body had already approved the hybrid concept. An ACC Board member told PTI that the plan would go ahead as stated to everyone. He said, “The Asia Cup model has been accepted by ACC and there would be no change. Ashraf is free to say whatever he wants.”

One of the two candidates chosen by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who serves as the board’s patron-in-chief and has the last word in appointment, is Ashraf for the position of PCB chairman. Ashraf’s appointment is currently only a formality. The ACC, under Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah, agreed to the hybrid format because India made it apparent that it won’t visit Pakistan because of the current geopolitical scenario.
Previously, Ashraf, a banker by business, served as chairman of the PCB. During his time with the media, Ashraf expressed his dislike for the thought of meaningless competitions taking place in his nation while they hold the hosting rights. He said, “All the main matches are happening outside (of Pakistan). (Teams like) Nepal and Bhutan are going to play in Pakistan – which is not fair for Pakistan. I do not know what the board has decided previously, I do not have access to the information. I will check, whatever is doable in the shortest possible time, will do that for the betterment of Pakistan.”
